Where She Went By

Every morning I wake up and tell myself this: It's just one day, one twenty-four-hour period to get yourself through.
I don't know when exactly I started giving myself this daily pep talk-or why.
But still, I find the need to remind myself of the temporariness of a day, to assure myself that I got through yesterday,
I'll get through today.

Gonzo Fist

The "Gonzo fist," characterized by two thumbs and four fingers holding a peyote button, was originally used in Hunter S. Thompson's 1970 campaign for sheriff of Aspen, Colorado.
It has become a symbol of Thompson and gonzo journalism as a whole.

Rahmat And Chotu

This story has to be told aloud. As we alighted from the Madurai Chennai Mercedes bus at 6 AM yesterday morning at Kathipara, I left my camera on my seat only to realize it around 7 AM after reaching home at Velachery.
I called the office number who told me to try to reach Egmore about 15 Km away where the bus may have reached by now.
Upon reaching there I learnt that the bus has completed its journey and been sent to the bus yard. I reached the yard around 8 AM quite apprehensive about having lost my 20 K camera loaded with priceless vacation memories.
As I tried to locate my bus out of about 100 other identical looking ones, a gleeful Chotu, seen in this picture saw me and stood waving some distance away.
He asked me a one word question, "Luggage?". I replied that I had left my camera on seat no 3. He invited me inside the bus where the driver was also smilingly seated at end of his shift, and in a jiffy, they delightfully handed me my camera after checking my ticket printout.
They also wanted me to check whether my camera was alright. I stole the chance and asked these two great guys to pose for my lens.
No tips were demanded, hinted or looked for, and none were given. Some people, because of their actions become part of our memories for a very long time.
My only lament, in my excitement of having recovered my camera, I could not even note down their names.
I chose to call them Rahmat and Chotu.
Thank you Rahmat and Chotu not just for the wonderful ride from Madurai to Chennai aboard the Mercedes bus, but because your actions will inspire me for quite some time.
As I said, this story must be told. And told aloud.

Update( Dec 29, 2012): Parveen Travels have shared with us that the real names of these two gentlemen are Mr Perumal (Driver) and Mr Murugesan ( Attendant). They have also reverted that this incident has been noted by Parveen Travels management.

Yet To Discover The Author

I am not a graceful person. I am not a Sunday morning or a Friday sunset.
I am a Tuesday 2 a.m., am gunshots muffled by a few city blocks, I am a broken window during February. My bones crack on a nightly basis.
I fall from elegance with a dull thud, and I apologize for my awkward sadness.
I sometimes believe that I don’t belong around people, that I belong to all the leap days that didn’t happen. The way light and darkness mix under my skin has become a storm.
You don’t see the lightning, but you hear the echoes.

To understand metaphor within imagery you have to imagine the picture the author of this piece is trying to create.
For instance, when you think of a Sunday morning you may think of a relaxed day.
A Friday Sunset (night) you might think of having a fun evening with your friends.
The author is saying he/she is neither of these simple, or relaxed things.

Then the poet gives examples of what they identify with:
A Tuesday 2am
Gunshot
Broken window during February

Notice that the author uses the same number of examples for both.
Dig deep on the imagery to understand the meaning behind each of these pictures.
What do you think of when you imagine Tuesday at 2am, a gunshot, or a broken window in February? None of these images are comforting or calm, leading us to believe that the author feels disruptive, dangerous, and useless.

Then the author uses further metaphor to describe the outcome.
Their bones feel week.
They feel disconnected from other's
The line: "The way light and darkness mix under my skin has become a storm." Refers to the happy things and sad things in their life mixing inside making them feel complex and misunderstood.
"You don't see the lightning, but you hear the echoes." is in reference to people close to them being unable to see the author's complex feelings, but able to see that the author is unhappy.

To Keep New Year's Resolutions

New Year's Eve has always been a time for looking back to the past, and more importantly, forward to the coming year.
It's a time to reflect on the changes we want (or need) to make and resolve to follow through on those changes.
Only 23 percent of the people who make new year's resolutions will see them through and I'm one of them (Not True)
