I just cant help feeling annoyed at people who
pre judge a dog specially well built breeds like Rottweilers because of the bad press and most of all the bad owners .
Many people still fear the look of the Rottweiler and this is not something that seems to be on the path of changing any time soon, as fear is what the Rottweiler has been placing in people for many years. It can be hard for owners of a Rottweiler to have guests into their home because of this immediate fear that people feel when they see a Rottweiler walking towards them. With a little education on the history of this breed, you cannot only help handle the fears of your guests, but you can help the bond you and the dog share.
By understanding what the Rottweiler breed has been through and what they have accomplished over the years, you will be able to better understand your pet and this may help you in raising them. Never mistake this breed for a dumb one as they are anything but and have been found over time to be helpful in both completing work chores and for protection of people and personal belongings.
This breed originally started many years ago and its ancestry even goes all the way back into the times of ancient Rome. Back then, the breed started as a Mastiff type dog, which was known as the Roman drover. During the day, while soldiers would travel, the drovers would herd cattle and then protect the soldiers during the night. This breed served as an excellent alarm in alerting the soldiers of surprise attacks.
But eventually, during the time of the many travels of Caesar, some of the drovers ended up being left behind for various reasons. It was the Germans who adopted the breed and took them in to breed them as dogs that would serve their needs like the needs of the soldiers were served. The Rottweiler actually got its name from the town where the dog became known as the dog of the butcher. This town was called Rottweil, Germany and it was here that the Rottweiler was able to show off what it can do.
While it seemed a natural choice to use the Rottweiler to pull carts and barges, the railroad soon came through and replaced the dogcarts. This advancement in travel left the Rottweiler without a job and the future was not looking good for the breed. That is until 1910 when the police officially recognized the Rottweiler as a police dog. Not only did the Rottweiler serve its country on the streets with police, but also they served their time in World War II when the Nazis and the Allies utilized their great strength and loyalty.
Then finally, in 1931, the American Kennel Club Stud Book admitted the first Rottweiler. The popularity of the Rottweiler had been growing for a decade, as the Rottweiler has come in on the American Kennel Club ’s top ten registered breeds. But even though in the year 2000, the Rottweiler slipped into eleventh place, the breed still is one of the most popular dogs to date and with the history that is behind this dog, there is no wonder as to why.
When thinking of getting a Rottweiler as a guard dog, remember that there is much more to them then just a scary looking dog. A lot of Rottweiler information can be found in different books or just by talking with your vet.
